The problem: one-way matches

Until recently, our WeCard matching algorithm worked in one direction. It looked at your wishlist and found collectors who held the cards you wanted. Simple enough, except it never checked the other side of the trade.

You’d get matched with someone who had the exact card you’d been hunting for months… and then nothing. They’d never respond, or they’d decline, because you didn’t have anything they wanted. From their perspective, your offer was just noise.

We heard about this a lot. Some of you told us you’d stopped trading altogether because finding someone who’d actually say yes to a trade felt like a lottery. Well that feedback hit home — a trading platform where trades rarely close isn’t much of a trading platform.

The fix: matching in both directions

Reverse matching does what the name suggests: before showing you a match, the algorithm now checks both wishlists.

• Does this collector have a card you want? ✔
• Do you have a card they want? ✔

Only when both answers are yes does a match get made. We call these “perfect matches” — when the platform pairs you with someone, you already know the interest goes both ways. No more sending offers into the void. No more receiving offers that were never relevant to you.

And yes, perfect matches are available to everyone — this isn’t a Premium-only feature.

Why finding a match can take longer now

Here’s the part that confused some of you, so let’s clear it up.

When you look for a trade, the platform searches for someone to trade with and pairs you with them. Under the old algorithm, it found one quickly almost every time — but that match was only half-checked, and more often than not, it went nowhere. Under the new algorithm, the bar is higher: a match only happens when the interest runs both ways. Higher bar means the search comes up empty more often — which some of you understandably read as a bug. It’s not, though. The dead-end matches didn’t disappear; we just stopped serving them to you.

Think of it this way: the old system handed you a maybe almost instantly. The new one would rather hand you nothing than hand you a no.

And sometimes, no match at all — here’s why

Two things are going on when your search comes up empty.

First, rarity. If your wishlist is full of rare or vintage cards, the pool of collectors who even hold them is small. And a perfect match requires one of those few to also want something from your collection. The rarer the card you’re hunting, the smaller that overlap gets.

Second, and this is worth knowing: each search doesn’t compare you against every single collector on the platform. To keep matching fast for everyone, each run scans a portion of the collector base. That means searching again — even a few minutes later — can genuinely find a trading partner the previous run didn’t look at. An empty result is a “not this time,” not a “never.”

So if you come up empty, try again — and keep trying over the following days. Collections and wishlists change constantly as people collect new cards and complete trades, and every search is a fresh draw. Keeping your own wishlist broad and up to date helps too — more overlap means more ways for a perfect match to happen.

The engineering behind it

Checking one wishlist is easy. Guaranteeing mutual interest across a community of collectors this large is a much heavier computational problem — and doing it naively would have made every search painfully slow. So before reverse matching could ship, our engineers spent weeks rebuilding and optimizing the matching engine itself. The result: matching computation now runs ~95% faster than before, even though every match involves strictly more checking than the old one-way version did. That performance work is what made reverse matching possible at all — a smarter match that takes forever to find helps nobody.
